Celebrating the Life of Marty Algaze

It is with deep sadness that we share that our friend, mentor, organizer, and former President Marty Algaze unexpectedly passed away on August 27th.

Marty was a powerhouse. As a founding member of the Stonewall Democratic Club, and a board member ever since, Marty was a leader in the LGBTQ movement, and helped paved the way for so many to be authentically themselves. He was a key part of a coalition of activists who helped us gain decades of progress, to ensure that, as Marty said to the New York Times in 1989, “Now we are so powerful politically. Everybody takes us seriously now. They may not like us, but they know we fight back.'' SDNYC joins with so many in deep appreciation of Marty's charm, insights, and knowledge. We will miss him terribly.

Marty’s family, friends, and SDNYC community came together for a celebration of Marty’s life on September 8th. We will continue to celebrate his life, and carry on his legacy by fighting for the LGBTQ community. If you would like to share a comment or memory, please post on this memorial website, and all are invited to read more about Marty's remarkable life and impact in Gay City News
